White Cast by the Lake: Claire's First Walk

After three weeks inside, Claire, 31, had one goal for Sunday: the lake. Two kilometres, two crutches, one white cast.

Kilometre 0 · The promenade

She planned the route like a hike: a bench every few hundred metres, a café halfway, no gravel.

Kilometre 1 · The wall

Halfway stop. Leg up on the old stone wall.

Halfway, she sat on the wall and put the cast up in the sun. A child asked if it hurt. “Only my pride,” she said.

A week later · By the sea

The lake walk worked. The next weekend she went further: a train south and a terrace above the sea.

You don't wait for the cast to come off to start living again.
