Sofia on crutches at dusk in a pink long leg cast

Week One in Pink: Sofia's Long Leg Cast

Sofia, 27, missed the last step off the tram on a Tuesday. By Thursday she had a pink cast from hip to toe, two crutches and a new motto: good things take time.

Day 1 · The chair

Day one. The cast is still warm. The sneakers stay in the bag.

The clinic offered white, blue or black. She asked for something brighter. The nurse came back with a roll of pink fiberglass and a grin.

Forty minutes later the leg was straight, heavy and very, very pink. The wheelchair ride to the car felt longer than the tram journey that started it all.

Day 3 · Check-up

Check-up day. Swelling down, toes pink, mood up.

The doctor tapped the cast, checked her toes and said the word everyone in a cast wants to hear: perfect. Six more weeks.

Day 6 · Two crutches, one plan

By the end of the week she traded the chair for crutches. Swing, plant, step. Swing, plant, step. Every curb became a small negotiation.

The T-shirt was a gift from her sister. It turned out to be the plan.

Six weeks sounded endless. Then I chose pink, and it started to feel like a story.

Next episode: Sofia goes back to work. The office has three steps and no lift.
