Long Leg Cast vs Full Leg Immobilizer: What's the Difference?
Share
A long leg cast and a full leg immobilizer do the same basic job: they keep the leg straight. One is a hard shell that stays on for weeks. The other straps on and comes off. Here is how they compare, plus the hinged knee brace people often confuse them with.
The long leg cast (LLC)
A long leg cast runs from the upper thigh to the toes. It is wrapped wet in plaster or fiberglass over padding, hardens in minutes and stays on until it is cut off with a cast saw. The knee stays straight or slightly bent the whole time. Full explanation in What is a long leg cast.
The full leg immobilizer
A full leg immobilizer is a long brace made of padded panels, metal or plastic stays and Velcro straps. It holds the knee straight like a cast, but it can be opened to check the skin, adjust for swelling or take off for washing. That is why clinics use it so often after knee injuries.

The hinged knee brace
A hinged brace has a joint at the knee that allows controlled bending. It supports the knee rather than locking it, so it does not feel like a cast at all.

Which one feels most like a cast?
The full leg immobilizer, by far. With the knee locked you get the same stiff-leg walk, the same struggle with chairs and stairs and a similar weight. The difference is the surface (padding instead of a hard shell) and freedom: you can loosen it or take it off.
Want the long leg cast experience without the injury?
That is exactly what the LLC Brace is for: a locked-knee full leg immobilizer, about 1.5 kg, open toes, removable in 30 seconds. More in LLC cast fetish: why a removable brace feels like the real thing.
The LLC Brace
Thigh to ankle, knee locked at 0°. Sizes S, M and L. $159.90, plain box, neutral billing.
FAQ
Is an immobilizer the same as a cast?
No. Both keep the leg straight, but an immobilizer is a removable brace and a cast is a hard shell that has to be cut off.
Can you walk in a full leg immobilizer?
Yes, with a straight-leg gait, usually with crutches at first.
Can you bend your knee in it?
Not when it is locked. That is the point.
